Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall has received a $25,000 grant from the Charles Loridans Foundation, Inc., a private foundation established in 1952 with a focus on a broad spectrum of the arts among its philanthropic pursuits.
The grant to Spivey Hall is in honor of Robert G. Edge, the chairman of the Loridans Foundation and a metro Atlanta arts leader who is a senior counsel at the law firm of Alston & Bird LLP.
The grant is for Spivey Hall’s 25th anniversary season, and will support the fees of the musicians performing in the season’s Spivey Series. The Loridans Foundation has been associated with Spivey Hall almost as long as Edge himself. [Full disclosure: the Loridans Foundation is also a financial supporter of ArtsATL.]
“The Loridans Foundation was among the first major donors to respond to Emilie Spivey’s original $1 million challenge gift that launched the campaign to build Spivey Recital Hall,” said Sam Dixon, Spivey’s executive and artistic director. “This wonderful grant made in honor of Bob Edge reflects his continuous and invaluable history of involvement with Spivey Hall since its very inception, as well as the critical support he and the Loridans Foundation have provided to other Atlanta-area arts organizations.”
Growing up in Lawrenceville, Edge studied piano in his youth. In 1953, at the age of 15, Edge performed a solo piano work on a Young People’s Concert presented by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in his hometown. Edge ultimately chose to pursue law. He attended the University of Georgia, where he was valedictorian, then Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and Yale Law School before joining Alston & Bird.
Edge’s connections with Spivey Hall go back 30 years, farther back than the hall itself. He is a founding trustee of the Walter and Emilie Spivey Foundation, which he established in 1986 with Emilie Spivey to support fine arts at what was then Clayton State College, which led to the construction of Spivey Hall. He has served as the foundation’s chairman and currently as vice-chairman, and has played a central role in Spivey Hall’s ongoing success since it opened its doors in January 1991.
