News Update: The Atlanta Contemporary is bringing back the Atlanta Biennial, announces this year’s artists

The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center has announced the return of the Atlanta Biennial, which has been on hiatus since 2007. “After a nine-year slumber,” says Daniel Fuller, curator at Atlanta Contemporary, “it is a pleasure to bring the Atlanta Biennial back to light . . . this exhibition allows us to go back to our institution’s roots, while thinking about art from the South in a fresh way. This Biennial is an invitation to engage voices of the South; it is a platform to gather upon.”

This 2016 edition will bring new voices from 10 different states within the Southeast. The first Atlanta Biennial took place in 1984 as a reaction to the Whitney Museum’s biennial survey of influential American contemporary art, which showcased no Southern artists. Alan Sondheim, the curator of Atlanta’s Nexus Contemporary at the time, created the Atlanta Biennial as a platform for Southern contemporary art. Between 1984 and 2007 the Atlanta Biennial showcased hundreds of artists from Atlanta and across the Southeast, including: Tom Ferguson, EK Huckaby, Elizabeth Lide, Susan Loftin, Philip Carpenter, Genevieve Arnold, Mario Petrirena, Constance Thalken, Julia Fenton, Joe Peragine and William Downs.

The 2016 Atlanta Biennial will be curated by Victoria Camblin, ART PAPERS’ editor and artistic director; Daniel Fuller, Atlanta Contemporary curator; Aaron Levi Garvey, independent curator and co-founder of Jacksonville’s Long Road Projects; and Gia Hamilton, director of the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. The full list of the 33 participants of this year’s Biennial is as follows:
