The Georgia Center for the Book hosts a talk by Mark Kurlansky, author of Ready for a Brand New Beat: How “Dancing in the Street” became an anthem for a changing America, on July 17. Kurlansky explores the connections between R& B music and the civil right movement.

The film “20 Feet From Stardom,” playing at the Tara, is an apt follow-up; it explores the experiences (and often exploitation) of the mostly black back-up singers who contributed mightily to the sounds of the likes of the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.

Information on Kurlansky’s lecture and more can be found among Ed Hall’s highlights and on WABE’s website, Atlanta Planit – a click away on our calendar page.
