The South Atlantic Region chapter of the AIA has announced its annual design awards. Six of the 21 awards went to projects by four Atlanta firms. We will post the winners this week, one firm a day, in alphabetical order.
First up is Robert M. Cain, who won both an honor and a merit award. Cain makes a virtue of thoughtful, unfussy modern design that sits gently in the landscape, be it rural or urban.
He won an honor award for the Folk Pottery Museum in northeast Georgia, which represents his particular skill at imbuing contemporary buildings with the spirit and forms of Southern vernacular architecture.
The RainShine House on a 1/3-acre lot in Decatur, which received a merit award, is a model of urban infill politesse. It is also LEED Platinum certified.
